What is the Breathe Respite Program?

Respite programs provide planned short-term and time-limited breaks for families of children with a developmental delay in order to support and maintain the primary care giving relationship. Respite also provides a positive experience for the person receiving care. Even though many families take great joy in providing care to their loved ones so that they can remain at home, the physical, emotional and financial consequences for the family caregiver can be overwhelming without some support, such as respite. Respite provides the much needed temporary break from the often exhausting challenges faced by the family caregiver.

Is there a need the Breathe Respite Program?

Absolutely! Only 10 to 15 percent of churches in the United States have a disability ministry or are planning one. In the US alone with face a shocking statistics: 50 million people with disabilities; only 49% attending a church. This leaves 24 million people unchurched!

What are the benefits of having a Respite Program?

Respite has been shown to help sustain family caregiver health and wellbeing, avoid or delay out-of-home placements, and reduce the likelihood of abuse and neglect. An outcome based evaluation pilot study show that respite may also reduce the likelihood of divorce and help sustain marriages. It is estimated that 85% of marriages who have children with severe disabilities end in divorce. The children with severe disabilities will benefit by having a one-on-one attention of their “Buddy” who will aide them in participating in any desired activity that is offered. Siblings of children with disabilities will have time to themselves and will allow them to participate in activities without the worry of watching over their sibling. Little Cypress Baptist Church will benefit from this outreach by meeting new people and introducing them to our Children’s Department, Adult Sunday School, Youth Department, and various other departments.
